Eline van Dijk: “the violin
has a familiar sound”
Thanks to your donations to The Netherlands Musical Instrument Foundation, you make hundreds of talented musicians, like Eline van Dijk, incredibly happy. You might recognize this young violinist from our magazine (2024), where she and her family were interviewed for the "Music is like Top Sports" section. At the time, Eline was still on the waiting list for a violin, but she has now found her perfect instrument. The violin has got a remarkable history!
Why were you looking for a new violin?
I've played on a violin (made by Houniet) with great pleasure and love for several years. I borrowed this violin from my teacher Chris Duindam. During my last solo performances, I realized I wanted to create even more volume and explore more layers of color that could complement my current playing style.
Which new instrument did you choose and why?
I chose a violin made by Pique, built in Paris (1797) and previously owned and played by Theo Olof. I feel very honored to be the next generation to play the violin. Over the past year, I've had the opportunity to try out several instruments, but none surpassed the Houniet violin's capabilities. Just before Christmas, Geertje from the Netherlands Musical Instrument Foundation called me to share the good news that two more exceptional violins had become available. After a day of trying them out, I chose this beautiful Pique. The sound gives me a familiar feeling, as if I already know it. The size also suits me perfectly, and because of that, I'm starting to discover all its layers and opportunities for playing solo!
Was is hard to say goodbye to your old instrument?
Yes, it truly felt like a farewell. I was so familiar and connected with the Houniet violin. I knew exactly how to express myself on that instrument. Now I have to figure that out on the Pique, and hopefully, we'll make a good team.
What concert are you looking forward to?
I've been selected for the first round of a competition in Estonia in early April (2025). I'll be playing a wide repertoire there and can really let loose with my new Pique violin!
