For a number of instruments in our collection, the experts have been unable to determine who built them. Often, however, the location or region is known, and in most cases, a construction period can also be determined. This conclusion can be drawn based on characteristics found in instruments made by multiple builders from the same region. To identify a specific maker, experts look for details that are characteristic of that maker. For stringed instruments, these include, in particular, the varnish, the shape, and the dimensions of various parts such as the scroll, the arch, the f-holes, the inlays, etc. For keyboard instruments, in addition to the model and materials used, attention is naturally also paid to the various technical aspects of the action.
