Anoniem

built in Flanders

An anonymous cello, built in Flanders in the 18th century, with a label reading “Ferdinand Gagliano.”

History of this instrument

The couple who loaned this cello to the Musical Instrument Fund in late 2011 and later donated it made that decision out of the conviction that an instrument is meant to be played. The man had played the cello as an amateur since around 1970, but had to stop for health reasons. His wife is the niece of a successful businessman who had purchased the cello in the early 20th century and played it for many years as a skilled amateur. Driven by the same conviction that an instrument should continue to be played, the cello eventually found its way to the niece and her husband. Since they loaned the cello to the Musical Instrument Fund, it has been played by Steuart Pincombe, Giorgos Kotsiolis, and Reinier Wink. Currently, Wilma de Bruijn is the lucky player.
