Serena Vanheuverswijn

violin, violin bow

"I think making music is the most wonderful thing there is, and sharing music is my passion."

Biography

My name is Serena Vanheuverswijn. I’m glad you want to know more about me!

I was born in 1998 in Ghent, Belgium, where I started playing the violin at age nine. When I was eleven, I moved to the Netherlands, where I continued my violin lessons with Carla Heidema, Evelien Bouwmeester, and Jan Schoonenberg. After I graduated from high school, it was clear to me: I wanted to study the violin! Since 2016, I’ve been studying at the Utrecht Conservatory, where I take lessons with Chris Duindam and Joyce Tan.

Playing in an ensemble is very important to me. Since 2014, I’ve been active in various orchestras, including the Netherlands Youth String Orchestra (NJSO), the Ricciotti Ensemble, and the National Youth Orchestra (NJO).

I also really enjoy playing in smaller ensembles. For example, I’ve been playing in the “Zahetsa Trio” since 2012. With this trio, we’ve had the opportunity to participate in various competitions, such as the Aberdeen Chamber Music Festival (2014, Scotland) and the Tristan Keuris Competition (2015).

We were awarded first prize on both occasions.

I play a 1992 violin by Willem Bouman. I am incredibly grateful to the Musical Instrument Fund for allowing me to play this beautiful violin for several years now!
