History of this instrument

In 2009, Sedje Hémon—whose official name was Sedje Frank—knew she did not have long to live. She then decided to loan this violin—which she had played since 1948—and a Lamy violin bow to the Musical Instrument Fund. After her death, the instruments were bequeathed to the fund.

She had led an eventful life; her parents had been murdered in Auschwitz, and she herself had been a member of the resistance during the war. In 1953, she was forced to end her career as a violinist for health reasons. Neither the horrors of the war nor her physical limitations prevented Hémon from reaching her full potential. In addition to being a violinist, she was also a composer, visual artist, and scientific researcher, and she popularized the pan flute in the Netherlands. She was friends with Theo Olof, through whom Hémon came into contact with the Musical Instrument Fund. In 2009, Caspar Horsch was the first violinist to play the violin. She was followed by Mayu Konoe and Hannah Visser. Currently, Floor Kes is the lucky one.
