I have been the proud “owner” of a Fonds cello since 1998. A Baroque cello built by Willibrord Crijnen (Marseille) based on a Tononi cello (1710) belonging to a fellow cellist from Basel, where I studied with Cristophe Coin.

A Baroque cello built by Willibrord Crijnen (Marseille) modeled after a Tononi cello (1710) belonging to a fellow cellist from Basel, where I studied with Cristophe Coin. The cello’s body is modeled after a late 17th-century design. Three plain gut strings (the G string is actually a ship’s rope) and a silver-wound C string serve as the standard strings. I once recorded a Bach viola da gamba sonata using the E-A-D-G tuning. The cello was complemented by a bow made by Basil de Visser, but for years now I’ve been using a Baroque bow by Pieter Affourtit. I play Bach in low tuning (A-392 Herz), as can be heard and seen in this video.

All of this pertains to the Fonds’cello, but the period cello isn’t the only thing I do. Of course, I’m also active as a “regular” cellist and play a “standard” modern cello, made by Tanja Brandon. I taught at the Musikhochschule in Trossingen (Baroque cello) from 2000 to 2004 and at the Universidad Juan Corpas in Bogotá (modern cello/chamber music and performance practice for pianists) between 2007 and 2011. In 2013 and 2014, I was a visiting professor in the newly established Department of Early Music (Master’s program) at the Universidad Central in Bogotá. I also taught modern cello and chamber music there and conducted chamber orchestra projects. In April 2015, I returned to Bogotá to perform all of Beethoven’s sonatas on the fortepiano (see here and read here).
Starting in 2018, a number of new productions will be released as videos or “audio-only” recordings by Dominus Maris Music Productions:
