“When Annelies and I started out in Amsterdam, there were hardly any people making a living from building new instruments. We were very idealistic. We wanted to build instruments that were just as good as those of the old masters—and affordable, too. We really had to fight for that. That fighting spirit, that “I’ll show them” attitude, comes through very strongly in my early instruments. They have tremendous power. I still believe that an instrument has to be very powerful, but it has to offer more than just power. You have to be able to play everything on it—from Baroque to modern music—and you also have to be able to play it softly.”
