Steinway & Sons

built in Hamburg in 1975

A Steinway & Sons grand piano. Model O-180 cm in walnut veneer. Serial number 441784, built in 1975.

History of this instrument

In 2015, the owner decided to donate the Steinway grand piano—which he had purchased himself in 1975—to the Musical Instrument Fund. There was no longer room for the grand piano in his new home, so he chose to switch to playing an upright piano and make the grand piano available through the Musical Instrument Fund to a young, talented pianist. He himself had played it for 40 years as an enthusiastic and highly skilled amateur. Chamber music, in particular, was frequently performed on this grand piano, as he played at home with, among others, his wife (on the cello), but especially in a quartet setting. When his wife passed away in 2007, her rare Pellizon cello and two bows were donated to the Musical Instrument Fund. Xavi Torres Vicente was the first to play the grand piano; currently, the Hamburg grand piano is in the hands of Antonio Carrascal.
