built in Hamburg in 1919

History of this instrument

The Musical Instrument Fund acquired this grand piano in 2007 through the bequest of Mrs. Renesse-Drukker, the widow of George van Renesse. Georges van Renesse was a Dutch pianist, conductor, and music educator with a distinguished international career. For example, he accompanied the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin during an international tour in 1947. Renesse served as principal piano instructor at the Amsterdam Conservatory for 15 years. Starting in 1954, he served as a producer and recording director for Dutch public broadcasting. He made recordings for the Artone and CNR labels. Many pianists mention in their biographies that they studied with him. In 2008, the Musical Instrument Fund had an extensive and necessary overhaul performed on the grand piano, restoring it to optimal playing condition. Since then, the grand piano has been played by Martijn Willers, who, like George van Renesse, teaches at the Amsterdam Conservatory. After nearly 11 years, he decided to make the grand piano available again to the next generation, and Kees Kruit was the lucky recipient. Anna Fedorova succeeded him, and since 2025, Jana Schell has been the pianist playing the Hamburg grand piano.
