built in Amsterdam in 1699

A cello built by Pieter Rombouts, bearing the label “Hendrick Jacobs me fecit in Amsterdam 1699.”

History of this instrument

In 2013, a private individual from Utrecht decided to donate his cherished Rombouts cello to the Musical Instrument Fund. He had originally inherited the cello and had played it for decades as his ideal musical partner. Recently, however, due to his age, playing had become less fluid, and he no longer felt it was appropriate to continue playing such a high-quality instrument. The cello was previously played by Kirsten Jenson (Ragazze Quartet) and Felicia Hamza and is now on loan to Tine van Parys.
