Jan-Bastiaan Neven
from Antonio Pelizon
History of this instrument
The owner of the Pelizon cello was an exceptionally talented amateur cellist from Soest. She had inherited the cello from an aunt who had once performed as a soloist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Eduard Flipse. The owner herself was a highly sought-after and valued chamber music partner due to her great musicality and her confidence, which provided a solid foundation for all her fellow musicians. One of her musical partners was her own husband, who plays the piano. He was the one who called us in 2008 to tell us that his wife had passed away and that she had bequeathed her cello and two bows to the Musical Instrument Fund. When the cello was presented to experts for evaluation, they were very enthusiastic about this rare and high-quality acquisition. The cellists who tried out the cello (including Dmitri Ferschtman) were also impressed. Ferschtman even said he had never heard such a beautiful low D on a cello! The Musical Instrument Fund decided to make the cello available to the winner of the National Cello Competition. Bas Jongen became its first player. Starting in late 2013, Sietse-Jan Weijenberg played the cello, and since mid-2015, Jan-Bastiaan Neven has been its player.
