Else Marije Baas
from Gustav Erhard Uebel

The Netherlands Student Orchestra (NSO) is a national project orchestra consisting of ninety young, passionate students. Every year in February, the student orchestra gives concerts throughout the Netherlands. During this period, the Musical Instrument Fund provides high-quality instruments to the musicians. And did you know that the NSO will be taking the stage this year alongside violinist Noa Wildschut? She has played instruments from the Musical Instrument Fund for no less than twelve years!

For an entire month, the music students of the Netherlands Student Orchestra set aside their textbooks to devote themselves entirely, with boundless energy, to their passion: music! After an intensive ten-day rehearsal period, the orchestra will perform in 13 concert halls, with Berlin and Duisburg as the international highlights. No fewer than 18 orchestra members will play an instrument or use a bow provided by the Musical Instrument Fund during this project.
With these exceptional instruments, the musicians have the opportunity to elevate their performance of Ravel’s greatest orchestral masterpiece, Daphnis et Chloé Suites Nos. 1 & 2, to new heights. This year, the NSO is led by conductor Arjan Tien, and the commissioned work, titled Durga-Puriya Sonata, was composed by the talented composer and trombonist Arjan Linker. You won’t want to miss this world premiere!
Else Marije Baas is this year’s concertmaster. She plays a violin built by Erhard Uebel (Amsterdam, 1942) from the collection of the Musical Instrument Fund.
In addition, the internationally renowned violinist Noa Wildschut will perform as soloist in Sergei Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto. From the age of eleven to twenty-three, Noa played instruments and/or bows provided by the Musical Instrument Fund. Through 2023, these instruments made a significant contribution to her career and her love of music. Fortunately, three years later, our paths are crossing again thanks to this tour!

Since 2011, the Musical Instrument Fund has been supporting a select number of members of the Netherlands Student Orchestra by providing them with high-quality instruments during its annual tour. This special opportunity enables the musicians to further develop and refine their sound and playing. This is of great value to the overall sound of the orchestra. Moreover, playing with the NSO provides a powerful boost to the students’ musical development, from which they will benefit for the rest of their lives. It’s a win-win situation, as this collaboration allows the Musical Instrument Fund to reach a target audience of potential donors. It also gives young musicians the opportunity to experience newly built instruments, which will hopefully inspire them to commission an instrument from a contemporary violin maker in the future. Instruments are returned through the maker. The fund hopes that this will plant the first seed for a long-term relationship between musician and luthier.

In an era dominated by digitization and social media, where idealized images and algorithms determine what is “normal” or “successful,” a college education (which is a privilege) sometimes risks becoming a straitjacket. It is precisely then that it will do young people good to feel untamed, as this can serve as a driving force in their quest for autonomy and their own identity. With this theme in mind, these virtuoso students will set aside their studies for a month and devote themselves with boundless energy to their passion: music. The tour will offer them an enriching, intense, and unforgettable experience that allows them to escape the daily routine for a while. In short, they’ll let loose and be untamed!
