Else Marije Baas
violin
My name is Else Marije Baas. I was born in 2005, and I play a beautiful violin—built by Erhard Uebel in Amsterdam in 1942—on loan from the Musical Instrument Fund. I am pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in violin at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the guidance of Maria Milstein and Peter Brunt.
I’ve been playing the violin since I was five and began my lessons with Jorinde Geradts and Liesbeth Bloemsaat-Voerknecht at the Hofstads Youth Orchestra Association, following the Suzuki method. In 2011, I continued my studies with Stieneke Voorhoeve-Poot. Starting in 2016, I attended high school at the School for Young Talent at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, studying with Mireille van der Wart.
I have participated in various competitions, such as the Florence Competition, where I won first prize in 2013. At the Princess Christina Competition, I won several encouragement prizes, and in 2022, I was awarded the Coosje Wijzenbeek Prize at the Dutch Violin Competition in the Davina van Wely category. Some of my most important solo performances took place in the Main and Small Halls of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and in 2018 I had the honor of performing a solo concert with the Tollens Ensemble, conducted by Marten Sijbrandij. With the Deventer Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Peter Bogaert, I had the honor of premiering a suite for violin and string orchestra by Julius Röntgen.
I take great pleasure in playing with my string quartet, the Amaris Quartet. We began our studies at the Dutch String Quartet Academy in 2025.
I enjoy playing in orchestras; for example, in 2022 I participated in the Concertgebouw Orchestra Young, where, as concertmaster, I had the privilege of performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Isabelle Faust. A dream come true! I have also played in the NJON and the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra.
I am very happy to have been granted a loan of this beautiful violin from the Musical Instrument Fund, built by Erhard Uebel in Amsterdam in 1942. With its warm, rich tone, this violin has captured my heart!
