Clara Gonzàlez Català
from Willem Bouman

Thanks to the generous support of music lovers, the Musical Instrument Fund is able to make its exceptional collection available to talented musicians. One such musician is the Spanish cellist Clara Gonzàlez Català, who has had a cello on loan from the fund since December 2024. Read on to get to know her.
For the past six years, I’ve played a high-quality instrument that helped me gain admission to the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Over the last three years, however, the instrument began to show cracks due to temperature fluctuations. This meant I had to visit instrument makers regularly, who were kind enough to repair the damage. Despite these efforts, as I progressed in my studies, I realized more and more that I couldn’t produce the sound I was striving for. My teachers also confirmed that I needed an instrument in better condition.

I chose a Willem Bouman cello from The Hague, 1995. It’s a fantastic instrument that immediately suited my playing style. In addition, through the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, I was able to borrow a Morizot bow. These opportunities allow me to explore new musical dimensions and refine my technique. It truly enhances my ability to express myself through music. The choice wasn’t necessarily easy, but as soon as I played the Bouman, I immediately felt a connection.
Yes, it really felt like a farewell. I was very familiar with my old instrument and had a strong connection to it. The cello had its limitations, but I knew exactly how to get the sound I wanted out of it. Now, with the Bouman, I still have many hours of practice ahead of me to discover the full range of sounds the cello has to offer. The Morizot bow helps me produce a better sound, but especially in the beginning, it’s a challenge to create good synergy between the two.

One piece I’d like to play on my new cello is Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto . It’s a piece I’ve always loved, and I think now is a good time to work on it. The Bouman cello allows me to discover the various nuances and timbres of the piece.
A high-quality musical instrument is often very expensive, but also indispensable. A good instrument fosters the development of talent, inspires, and challenges. By donating to the Musical Instrument Fund, you’ll help provide more than 435 talented young musicians with a good instrument that suits them on an ongoing basis. The fund and the musicians are extremely grateful to you for this!
