Night of the Violin: Fiddle Talks

The Musical Instrument Fund has its own podcast: De Instrumentenkamer. For the fund, the podcast is a wonderful medium for giving musicians, instrument makers, experts, and others involved a platform to talk about their relationship with their instrument, their careers, or other stories. This makes every episode special!

Music journalist Guido van Oorschot interviewed various violinists during the Night of the Violin. The “violin talk” was recorded and can be heard in six new podcast episodes. Would you like to learn more about the career of a jazz soloist? How does it feel to be a winner of the Coosje Wijzenbeek Prize? Are you curious about the background of an instrument from the collection? And what does the director of the Musical Instrument Fund have to say about the instrument collection? All these questions are answered in the miniseries Fiddle Talks.

Diana Fakour en Luca van der Waals.

Episodes

You can find all episodes, produced by Spraakmaker Media, at Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube and our Libsyn.

The first episode of the miniseries “Fiddle Talks” features Yannick Hiwat. During his studies, Hiwat played classical music, but these days he is better known as a jazz soloist. His “mezzo-violin” has no fewer than 7 strings!

Shauntell Baumgard is the guest on the second episode. She plays a wide range of genres: from jazz and R&B to kaseko and Latin. Shauntell plays a violin built by Jaap Timmer in 1993, with a bow made by Karel van der Meer in 1900. Both instruments are part of our collection.

In episode 3 of the miniseries “Fiddle Talks,” violinist Anan Al-Kadamani shares his story. Anan and his band perform traditional Arabic, Ottoman, and Greek music.

The fourth episode features violinist Peter Brunt. As a professor of violin at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Brunt knows a thing or two about “violin talk.” He is also a board member of the Dutch Violin Competition. Peter plays an anonymous, presumably Venetian violin from the 18th century on loan from the Musical Instrument Fund.

Evy Hamers, Luca van der Waals, Diana Fakour, and Joshua Tavenier are four of the eight winners of the 2022 Coosje Wijzenbeek Prize. These young talents explain what the prize entails and how the fund supports their musical careers. Two of the four winners play instruments from our collection. Evy has a violin on loan, built by Max Möller Sr. in 1931. Diana plays a violin built by Marten Cornelissen in 1986.

In the latest episode of the miniseries “Fiddle Talks,” Manon Veenendaal, director of the Musical Instrument Fund, talks about the fund. What are the fund’s objectives, what makes the relationship between the fund and its donors so special, and how do you maintain a valuable, high-quality collection of instruments?
