Wilma de Bruijn
cello, cello bow
"Every single day, it's such a joy to be able to hear the sounds of a beautiful instrument—it never ceases to inspire me!"
I am immensely grateful that, as a young musician, I am able to have so many special experiences. The Musical Instrument Fund plays a very important role in that for me!
Over the past few years, I’ve had a number of different cellos on loan, each with its own unique qualities. Playing different instruments has allowed me to develop broadly as a cellist. With such a beautiful instrument, I’m still discovering new sounds and timbres all the time, and my instrument challenges me to refine my cello playing.
First, a little bit about myself
My name is Wilma de Bruijn; I was born in 1998 in Leiden and have been playing the cello since I was nine. I started with private lessons from Anke Wouters. Starting at age 14, I studied with Lucia Swarts at the School for Young Talent at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. I continued my studies and earned both my Bachelor of Music and my Master of Music under Jan Ype Nota at the Royal Conservatory. During my studies in The Hague, I also took lessons with Roger Regter and Michel Strauss.
As the Mare Quartet, we completed the chamber music master’s program at the Royal Conservatory as an ensemble and studied with Janet Krause and Quirine Scheffers. In addition, we received masterclasses from, among others, members of the Cuarteto Casals and Marc Danel of Quator Danel.

Over the years, we’ve been involved in countless interesting projects, masterclasses, concerts, and tours have come and gone, but my favorite highlight was definitely my participation in the 2020 Holland Festival in the opera *aus LICHT* for the performances of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s *HELIKOPTER STREICHQUARTETT*.
A good instrument has been of great importance for all the highlights of recent years and for my entire development as a professional musician. Without a good cello, I could never have done this. That’s why the Musical Instrument Fund is so important to me—and for my future as well. Every single day, it’s an incredible joy to hear the sounds of a beautiful instrument—because that never ceases to inspire me!
Many thanks to the Musical Instrument Fund!
