cello

I’m probably one of the oldest borrowers from the Musical Instrument Fund. I’ve been playing a beautiful, warm-sounding 18th-century Bohemian cello since 1992. Initially as a dedicated classical musician in chamber music, now only in theatrical contexts. I call myself a “performing musician.” I feel right at home combining singing, playing the cello, and acting. While I still use my own old cello for “risky” performances, I consider the cello from the Musical Instrument Fund to be my own instrument above all others. It and I have become inseparable. There was a time when every letter from the fund made my heart skip a beat with fear: would I have to give it back? Fortunately, the Musical Instrument Fund supports my career shift from classical music to theater, and I’m allowed to keep playing the cello for now! Once, I experienced a touching moment after a theater performance.

Little boy: Is that cello yours?

Me: “That cello isn’t mine; it belongs to the Musical Instrument Fund.”

Little boy: “So can you take it home with you every day?”

Girl: Of course. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be able to practice!

Little boy: Did you have to promise to be really careful with it?

Me: Yes, and I do.
