Laura Oomens

violin, viola bow

Overjoyed...

When I first came into contact with the Musical Instrument Fund in 2010, I had no idea what a loan program entailed exactly or what it could mean for me. I was incredibly lucky: For the first three years, I played a beautiful violin of unknown origin with a sound like a fine Burgundy: warm, dark, and distinctive. After a while, I began to feel the need for an instrument with more brilliance and ease of play. In 2013, I had the opportunity to try out a Joseph Gagliano. That first “encounter” immediately gave me such a familiar and pleasant feeling that I knew switching from one instrument to the other was almost inevitable. It’s strange, though, to trade in your trusted violin for another one just like that, from one day to the next! I’ve been happily working with the Gagliano, exploring new tonal colors, inspired by its countless possibilities and Italian finesse. Now this violin feels like a glove made just for me—one I know inside and out and with which I can go (almost) anywhere musically. I’m absolutely over the moon with this magnificent instrument!

For several years now, I’ve also had a viola bow on loan that pairs perfectly with my Iwata viola.
