Hendrik Woldring

*1952 , Muiderberg

Hein Woldring grew up in a family of artists and listened to classical music from a young age. These circumstances inspired him to pursue training in engineering and fine woodworking. Woldring became fascinated by the intersections between technology and aesthetics. In his view, these intersections reach their pinnacle in violin making. Driven by this passion, he began his violin-making training in the Netherlands and, in 1974, decided to enroll in the violin-making program in Newark, England, which he successfully completed in 1977.

Since 1985, Woldring has been working as an independent violin maker and restorer in Groningen, with, as he himself says, undiminished passion. Together with his wife, he founded Het Strijkershuis. His preference lies with the old Italian and Dutch schools. In his instruments, Woldring strives for what he describes as “a broad, crisp tone with rich overtones, great dynamic range, and a light response, giving the musician every opportunity to add color and shape to the music.” The varnish, which he formulates himself, is the result of extensive research and plays a key role in the beauty, sound, and aging process of his instruments.
