Andreas Grütter

*1956 , Zürich

Andreas Grütter, born in Switzerland, has been a bow maker since 1982. His workshop is located in the heart of Amsterdam. Grütter strives to push the boundaries with every bow he crafts, seeking to harmoniously blend aesthetics, tone, and the feel in the hand into a single, meaningful whole. In addition to modern bows, Grütter also crafts many Baroque and Classical bows from snakewood and ironwood. He also specializes in the trade, restoration, and repair of “antique” bows. His goal is to achieve a better balance—and thus an improvement in playing qualities—by, for example, making adjustments to the curve or the winding. In recent years, Grütter has been striving, in an almost Kabbalistic manner, to harmonize all the proportions and dimensions of his new bows. He regularly gives courses and lectures on bow making.
