History of this instrument
This violin was purchased by the VandenBroek Foundation in 2011 and loaned to the Musical Instrument Fund. The fund handled the entire selection process for the purchase of the violin. It was a highly demanding task that took several years to complete. At least fifty top-quality instruments were evaluated before the Guadagnini was selected as the best. Michael Zuber purchased the Guadagnini in Strasbourg in the 1980s. The violin had previously belonged to the heirs of Josef Hofmann, a Polish-American composer. Zuber gave many concerts on the Guadagnini and made a number of recordings with it. Zuber traded in the Guadagnini when he purchased a Stradivarius. For the Musical Instrument Fund, Marlene Hemmer was an excellent first candidate to be granted the privilege of playing the Guadagnini. The violin was in the hands of Amarins Wierdsma from 2018 to 2024 and is currently played by Ionel Manciu, concertmaster of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.
