Francesco Goffriller

built in Venice in ± 1725

The “Douglas Kane violin, formerly owned by Bouw Lemkes,” built by Francesco Goffriller in Venice, ca. 1725. With a label reading “D. Montagnana.”

History of this instrument

This violin was owned for approximately sixty years by the renowned violinist and violin teacher Bouw Lemkes, who sold part of it and donated the rest to the Musical Instrument Fund in 2011. The purchase price was donated to the Musical Instrument Fund by the Douglas Kane Fund. Thanks to these two generous contributions, the Musical Instrument Fund was able to add this instrument to its collection and thereby preserve it for Dutch musical life. It is highly likely that this violin was built not in Venice but in Udine, though it was sold from Venice. Should further research confirm that the violin was indeed built in Udine, the Musical Instrument Fund will update the description accordingly. Maria Milstein has been the violin’s primary player since 2011. In 2013, the violin was loaned to Cécile Gouder de Beauregard. In 2016, Tijmen Huisingh was briefly loaned the violin. In 2017, Judith van Driel became the lucky player; Judith considers this violin the ultimate chamber music instrument, which truly shines in the Dudok Quartet, of which Judith is the first violinist.
