Sonsoles Vallés
from Giorgio Gatti
History of this instrument
The Musical Instrument Fund received this violin on loan in 2016 from Guus Ghijsen, a violist with the Residentieorkest in The Hague. He has owned the Gatti since 1975. The violin previously belonged to Maurice Raskin (one of the most important Belgian violin soloists of the 20th century), with whom the current owner studied in Maastricht and Brussels. After completing his violin studies in Cologne under Franzjosef Maier, he spent a short time as a violinist with the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne. He then switched to the viola and played the violin only sporadically in chamber music settings and while teaching. The Musical Instrument Fund is very grateful to Guus Ghijsen for making his cherished violin available to be played by a talented musician! Currently, Sonsoles Vallés is the lucky one.
