History of this instrument
In 2019, this Steinway grand piano entered the collection of Het Muziekinstrumentenfonds through a bequest. Caecilia Andriessen, widow of renowned pianist Tan Crone, had taken care of her beloved Steinway-B grand piano and, in accordance with Tan Crone’s wishes, ensured a worthy home for the piano after her own passing in 2019 by bequeathing it to the Musical Instrument Fund. Tan Crone (1930–2009) was a passionate musician who made a significant contribution to Dutch musical life. She studied in Amsterdam with Nelly Wagenaar, and later with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and with Rudolf Serkin in the U.S. She was friends with and knew many international musicians, including Pablo Casals, Clara Haskil, Pierre Bernac, Tibor de Machula, and Theo Olof. She was a passionate chamber musician and song accompanist. She gave many concerts with singers such as Roberta Alexander, John Bröcheler, Meinard Kraak, Carolyn Watkinson, and Miranda van Kralingen. With Roberta Alexander, she recorded a number of beautiful records and CDs. She also made her mark as a teacher. During the annual Orlando Festival, she gave master classes in art song together with Miranda van Kralingen. She also accompanied concert tours to the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg together with Caecilia Andriessen. It is remarkable that, with this beautiful grand piano, the Musical Instrument Fund has once again been able to add an instrument to its collection that was played by one of the Netherlands’ most important musicians.
Rik Kuppen is the first performer to play the instrument.
