Stop list: Principale 8’, Ottava 4’, Decimaquinta 2’, Flauto in Ottava 4’, Voce Umana 8’ (treble). Based on an initiative and idea by conductor and organist Krijn Koetsveld. Available for loan on a project basis.

History of this instrument

In 2019, the Musical Instrument Fund commissioned the construction of this unique instrument. Krijn Koetsveld, organist and leader of the ensemble Le Nuove Musiche, came up with the idea of building an organ that Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643) spoke so fondly of: an organ with wooden pipes (“organo di legno”), with a characteristically sweet (“suave”) sound that blends so beautifully with voices and other instruments. Koetsveld’s idea proved to have broad support within the early music community. The Musical Instrument Fund therefore joined forces with the Dutch firm Klop, Krijn Koetsveld, and external advisor Pieter van Dijk to develop the instrument.

Research into, and the use of, historical data—combined with innovative construction techniques—has resulted in an instrument that does justice to the “organo di legno” of the early Baroque period while also fitting into contemporary performance practice. The Monteverdi organ is available for loan on a project basis during periods when it is not in use by Krijn Koetsveld.
