harpsichord

Gerrit Klop

built in Gardeners in 1974

A harpsichord built by Gerrit Klop in Garderen in 1974. Two-manual, 2x8’ and 1x4’, with a lute.

History of this instrument

This harpsichord, built in 1974, was donated to the Musical Instrument Fund in 2016 by a music-loving donor. We didn’t immediately have a candidate for the instrument, but that changed during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. When all conservatories were forced to close their doors, many keyboardists were at a loss; from one day to the next, they no longer had a place to study. The fund then, in close collaboration with David Kuyken (Instrument Committee), launched an initiative to place grand pianos, a fortepiano, and this harpsichord in students’ homes free of charge. Fortunately, we were able to count on the tremendous dedication of piano technician Frank Bonarius and the transport company Griffioen.

Thanks to this initiative, Katerina Orfanoudaki was still able to continue her studies during the lockdown. After the lockdown, the harpsichord was returned, and Guy Maori is currently playing the instrument.
