History of this instrument
This exceptionally early Bechstein grand piano with a right-hand action was donated to the Musical Instrument Fund by a private individual in 2013. The owner had originally acquired the piano from a garage owner in Eindhoven who hadn’t exactly treated it with care. The garage owner was glad to be rid of “that thing.” The owner then got in touch with Jan de Man, former head of piano studies at the Royal Conservatory, who was able to advise him on how to restore the grand piano to good condition. Afterward, the instrument was used at the owner’s home in Amsterdam. The Musical Instrument Fund has chosen to place this historic grand piano at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam so that various conservatory students (modern piano and fortepiano) can become familiar with an instrument that represents an important period in the German repertoire.
