Cesare Candi

built in Genoa in ± 1920

A double bass, built by Cesare Candi in Genoa, ca. 1920. The double bass is part of the “Willem G. Vogelaar Collection.”

History of this instrument

The rare Cesare Candi was purchased in 2017 by the Musical Instrument Fund from a renowned Dutch bassist who served for many years as principal bassist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The entire purchase price was funded by a substantial donation from a private foundation. This donation enabled the purchase of several instruments, all of which have been added to the “Willem G. Vogelaar Collection.” The Musical Instrument Fund consulted with several bassists and experts during the selection process. They particularly praise the double bass for its versatility—especially as a solo instrument—its excellent condition, and the high quality of its craftsmanship, which is on par with that of other instruments from the string family dating from the early 20th century. Olivier Thierry has been playing the Genoese double bass since 2017.
