Edward Popplewell J’Anson

built in Manchester in ± 1850

A double bass, built by Edward P. J’Anson in Manchester around 1850, named after the donor, the “Theodora bass.”

History of this instrument

During a sound test in 2023, this double bass sounded so good that we immediately set out to add it to the collection of the Musical Instrument Fund. Several bass soloists who were present and advised us during the sound test indicated that they would love to try the bass if we didn’t end up buying it. Fortunately, however, the purchase went through thanks to a generous donation from the Hans and Thea Alders-Timmer Fund, a fund established in her name upon the passing of Mrs. Thea Alders. The double bass bears her name—the “Theodora bass”—and we are deeply grateful to her.
Javier Clemén Martínez is the first player of the double bass from Manchester.
