History of this instrument

Three years after its founding, the Musical Instrument Fund was able to acquire this exceptional Gagliano cello from the Röntgen collection. The cello had been in the Röntgen family’s possession since 1914 and was played by Engelbert Röntgen, principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and later by his half-brother Edvard Röntgen, associate principal cellist of the Residentie Orkest. In 1992, the instrument was purchased and loaned to Cecilia van Hoof, also associate principal cellist of the Residentie Orkest, who played it for many years. Since 2001, the cello has been on loan to Michaël Müller, principal cellist of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and a member of the Ruysdael Quartet.
