Daniel Rowland
from Nicolas Auguste Eugène Maline

On January 25, master violinist Daniel Rowland will present exceptional violins from the collection of the world’s largest musical instrument foundation—the Muziekinstrumentenfonds—in The Hague. During this “Listening Competition,” five different violins will be played and compared. The competition includes a game element: the audience can watch, vote, and win!
The Musical Instrument Fund is organizing this Listening Competition in collaboration with the Dutch Violin Competition: Iordens (January 11–26, 2014). In this Listening Competition, the audience is the contestant. Visitors will compete against one another to listen to various exceptional violins from the Music Instrument Fund’s collection. How do you recognize an old Italian violin or a newly built violin from Amsterdam? Can you distinguish the instruments from one another better than anyone else? The prize is a private concert by a musician in your own home!
First, you’ll hear five unique and very different violins. Frits Schutte (head of the collection at Het Muziekinstrumentenfonds) will talk about the violins’ origins and their makers. Violinist Daniel Rowland will perform each violin one by one. Then the master violinist will hide behind a screen, and it’s up to the participants! Can you guess which violin he’s playing?
After the intermission, there will be a recital by Daniel Rowland featuring works by Bartók, Enescu, and Prokofiev. The results will be announced afterward. Who will recognize all the violins and walk away with the prize? Order your tickets now for this interactive and educational concert.
