In Memoriam:
Jan Verheugt
(1946–2025)
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Jan Verheugt, a former board member of Het Muziekinstrumentenfonds, recently passed away. Jan was a remarkable person, a passionate music lover, and a dedicated board member who left a lasting impression on our foundation and on everyone who worked with him.

Jan lived and breathed music. His commitment to the foundation went far beyond his administrative role: he was actively involved in expanding our collection and had a keen eye for instruments with character, history, and potential. His enthusiasm was contagious, and his warm personality made him a beloved colleague and friend.
In 2018, journalist Frederike Berntsen spoke at length with Jan about his work and his passion for music. In that interview, which is still available on our website, he says: “The process of acquiring and lending out—that’s something I’m still really passionate about.” Those words describe him perfectly. Jan didn’t see the collection as a mere assortment of instruments, but as a living network of musicians, stories, and possibilities. Read the 2018 interview here.
In addition to his work for the foundation, Jan was an active musician himself. He played a lot of chamber music and remained active as much as possible well into his later years. He understood better than anyone how important it is for young musicians to have access to good instruments, and he devoted himself to this cause with all his heart and soul.
Jan was a pleasure to work with: friendly, enthusiastic, and always willing to contribute ideas. His commitment to the fund was sincere and long-standing. Even after he officially left, he remained interested in our activities and was always ready to offer advice and encouragement.
We will miss Jan. His legacy lives on in the instruments that, thanks to him, have found their way to talented musicians, and in the memories we share of him.
On behalf of the entire team at Het Muziekinstrumentenfonds, we wish his family, friends, and everyone else who loved him much strength.
