Noa Eyl
from Martin Leopold Widhalm

On Saturday, June 28, the first concerts in the “Music & Monuments Concerts” series took place. We found this renewed collaboration between the Musical Instrument Fund and Natuurmonumenten to be a great success! Accompanied by birdsong and a setting sun, music and nature lovers enjoyed a performance in the heart of the food forest at the Haarzuilens Estate. On one of the hottest days in June, I set out—along with four musicians and a collection of unique instruments—for the green oasis just outside Utrecht: the Haarzuilens Estate, managed by Natuurmonumenten. At Hoeve Wielrevelt, we were warmly welcomed by the organizers and an enthusiastic group of volunteers.
While the volunteers were preparing for the guided tour for the visitors, the musicians were getting ready on their outdoor stage: an intimate amphitheater, tucked away in the heart of the food forest, surrounded by more than 150 species of edible plants.

"Chosen" Ensemble at the Haarzuilens Estate
After a half-hour walk led by the forest ranger, the guests gathered in the amphitheater. There, they were taken on a musical journey by the ensemble Chosen, consisting of Noa Eyl (violin), Michel Marang (clarinet), Dani Luca (cimbalom), and Gabriël Barbalau (double bass). The program was a rich mix of styles and influences: from Stravinsky and Joseph Achron to Klezmer, Balkan, Arabic, and Armenian folk music. All these sounds blended into a powerful, moving whole and a tribute to musical diversity and cultural richness.
The birds sang along, a stork soared through the sky, and the sun slowly sank below the horizon. An enchanting experience for anyone who loves both music and nature.
