What moves me? People, nature, and… music. Music I used to play on the cello; music I always listen to (from classical music to 60s and 70s hits) and which I enjoy singing, preferably in harmony. What a joy to have found the Netherlands Musical Instrument Foundation, where everything ultimately revolves around music!

For most of my working life as a physiotherapist, I was focused on people and movement. Until a few years ago, I realized there's so much more that moves me. After previous forays into the cultural sector, I'm happy to be involved in the (photo)editing of the impressive collection of biographies that fellow volunteer Jan Boekhout has written over the past few years about the luthiers and instrument makers in the collection. It's been a truly enjoyable challenge to find fitting images for these life stories and put the finishing touches on them.

The collection is so ‘rich’ and vast - choosing a favourite instrument is pretty much impossible. But after browsing through the cellos (old love never dies!), I arrived at my final choice: a cello made by Farotti, for this instrument in particular evokes a special memory for me.
A few years ago, I saw the enchanting documentary “The Secret of Boccherini,” in which cellist Anner Bijlsma travels with his daughter to an abandoned Spanish palace to pass on Boccherini’s musical secret to a new generation. In the intimate portrait, directed by his daughter Carine Bijlsma, the extraordinary cellist came very close.
The fact that this cello was played by Bijlsma for decades gives the instrument a special touch for me.
