Wiesje Nuiver
violin
My name is Wiesje Nuiver (1989), and I started playing the violin when I was 9. Since 2003, I have been a loan recipient from the Het Muziekinstrumentenfonds, and I am currently the proud owner of a beautiful violin by Johannes Cuypers from 1768.
I studied in Amsterdam and The Hague with Vera Beths, and I am a violinist with the ensemble “Astori Amsterdam” and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.
I absolutely love playing in an orchestra, especially opera music, and am therefore very happy with my wonderful job at the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, where—in addition to concerts at the Concertgebouw—we perform an average of four major opera productions each season with De Nationale Opera.
I also have a great passion for chamber music, creating something new, and songs, and these three things come together perfectly in the ensemble “Astori Amsterdam,” which I founded in 2018/2019. Together with Sterre Konijn, Vincent van Amsterdam, and James Oesi, we perform Argentine instrumental music and songs, but translated into Dutch: “Stories from Buenos Aires.”
My musical activities and career have always been closely linked to the ability to play this violin. The possibilities in timbre are endless, and I can blend well with my fellow musicians thanks to the flexibility of the sound, which is very beneficial for both my chamber music and orchestral activities. From transparent lightness to a dark, deep tone, it lends itself perfectly to the grand symphonies of Mahler, Brahms, and Strauss, which feature prominently on the Nedpho’s program.
