I study cello at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. I started there at age 13, studying with Monique Bartels at the Sweelinck Academy. During this Young Talent program, I played for five years in the Fancy Fiddlers, the string ensemble conducted by Coosje Wijzenbeek. I also sang for four years in the National Children’s Choir, conducted by Wilma ten Wolde. With both ensembles, I gave many concerts both at home and abroad, including in Switzerland, France, Belgium, and Germany. Since 2015, I have been studying in the bachelor’s program with Jelena Očić. During my bachelor’s studies, I have played in various ensembles. In addition, I occasionally participate in projects outside the realm of classical music. Recently, I also resumed voice lessons with Marjan Kuiper.
Since 2013, the Musical Instrument Fund has given me the opportunity to play a beautiful cello. The cello, built by Jules Gabriel Boulangeot in 1933, is named “de Valerie.” It is a Belgian cello with a beautiful, clear, and focused tone that suits me well. In addition to the cello, I borrow a bow from the fund, made by Andreas Grütter. This was the first truly beautiful bow I had the privilege of playing, and for years now, just like my cello, it has helped me grow as a musician. What’s so wonderful about playing a good instrument is the way it grows with you and the way you grow with it. The relationship with your instrument is, of course, one of the most intense relationships you’ll have in your life as a musician. That’s why it’s so wonderful that the foundation offers me all these amazing opportunities.
