Geert Pfeiffer

double bass, double bass bow

Geert grew up surrounded by music from an early age. He started playing the piano at a young age, then switched to the double bass later on. He has been captivated by the instrument ever since. When I was 14, my music teacher at the time asked if I’d like to take a double bass home over the summer break so that I could play with the youth orchestra performing *The Firebird* after the summer. I think I played the bass for about an hour total that whole summer, but after the first orchestra rehearsal, I was hooked. How amazing was that! Seventy peers gathered together who shared the same passion—I was instantly hooked.

Things moved pretty quickly for me after that. After about half a year, I played with the JON (Dutch Youth Orchestra) for the first time, and two years later, I was serving as concertmaster for the same orchestra. My time with the JON was fantastic; I made enormous musical progress and grew tremendously in my orchestral playing.

In 2019, I left the JON to audition for the NJO. There, in the summer of 2019, I took part in two incredibly fun projects: one in the form of a sinfonietta conducted by Alexander Sitskovistky, and a symphony project conducted by Anthony Hermus.

I’m currently on loan a fantastic bass from Het Muziekinstrumentenfonds, which really motivates me to play better—everything comes more easily on this bass.
