Esther van der Eijk

viola

As the daughter of a recorder player and a carillonneur, I have been surrounded by music since childhood. I studied viola at the Zwolle Conservatory with Else Krieg, at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Jürgen Kußmaul, and at the Scuola di musica di Fiesole (Italy) with Antonello Farulli.

Back in the Netherlands, I played in the Radio Symphony Orchestra for several years, but early music continued to beckon. So much so that I specialized in Historical Performance Practice under violinist Lucy van Dael and, in the year 2000, toured throughout Europe with the European Union Baroque Orchestra. Since then, I have performed with many different national and international ensembles, including Anima Eterna Brugge, the Netherlands Bach Society, the Millennium Orchestra, Ad Mosam, Barok, Collegium 1704 Prague, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, La Sfera Armoniosa, Ensemble In Alto, and many others.

In 2005, I was one of the founders of the Holland Baroque ensemble, where I served as the violist, was a member of the Artistic Team for many years, and with which I won several awards.

In 2020, together with a number of like-minded colleagues and friends, I founded the PENTA Quintet. In addition to performing in this string quintet, I am involved in programming, arranging, and managing the business side of the ensemble.

The Musical Instrument Fund has loaned me a beautiful viola made by the Amsterdam violin maker Pieter Rombouts. The instrument was built around 1720. Since my focus is on performing Baroque music, this instrument is a perfect fit for me.
