My name is Diederik Smulders, and I am a versatile cellist. As a freelancer, I perform with orchestras and ensembles such as Het Muziek (Asko|Schönberg), Cello Octet Amsterdam, the Metropole Orchestra, the Ballet Orchestra, the Residentie Orchestra, and Kamerata Zuid.
I completed my bachelor’s degree in Tilburg under the guidance of Professor Paul Uyterlinde, and in 2022 I earned my master’s degree cum laude and with honors at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague under the guidance of Professor Lucia Swarts.
My greatest passions are orchestral playing, contemporary music, and light music. I have performed in ensembles and orchestras such as Asko|Schönberg, Cello Octet Amsterdam, the Residentie Orkest, the Ballet Orchestra, the Metropole Orkest, and Kamerata Zuid.
The cello I play suits me very well because it is extremely versatile. I can handle it effectively in a variety of musical settings. It’s also nice that I can visit the cello’s maker to learn everything there is to know about the instrument.
