Anastasia Kozlova

violin bow

Anastasia Kozlova is a multidisciplinary musician. She tells stories through the sound of her violin, making music almost tangible as she explores new boundaries to bring classical music closer to the listener.

Anastasia Kozlova, a multidimensional musician and violinist, captivates her audience with extraordinary interpretations, compelling background stories, and a blend of ideas that come together in a remarkable performance.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, to renowned Russian musicians (including members of the Leningrad Philharmonic) and a descendant of the Russian aristocracy. Anastasia has made it her mission to inspire (young) people to appreciate classical music. To this end, she creates performances that blend musically exquisite, emotionally moving playing with other themes, multimedia, and storytelling.

Most recently, she has performed in Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia, the U.S., and Finland, among other places.

In addition to playing the violin, Anastasia also organizes classical music festivals (Festival Gooisch Klassiek, Festival Groeneveld, Festival Kroonjuwelen at Soestdijk Palace) and concerts. As a classical music innovator, she has developed concepts such as “music and yoga” and “music, sports, and their effect on the brain” in collaboration with Prof. Erik Scherder. A program in collaboration with the University of Tartu, Eesti Kontsert, and Prof. Jaan Aru, focusing on brain research and the influence of music, took place in Tallinn in October 2018.

Her musical partners have included Katja Avdeeva, Timora Rosler, Daniel Rowland, Daria van den Bercken, Sergei Stadler, Anna Shafajinskaia, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Duo Bilitis, Bernd Brackman, Raphail Wallfish, Eva Tebbe, Klara Würtz, and Ralph van Raat.

The new programs for the season include, among others, Ensemble Lumen with harpist Eva Tebbe.

The successful theater production “Händel goes Tinder,” featuring soprano Channa Malkin, guitarist Itzhar Elias, bassist Tony Overwater, and harpsichordist Avinoam Shalev, has been performed 40 times at Parade in Amsterdam and Utrecht, among other venues.

Kozlova began taking violin lessons at the age of seven and was admitted a year later to the Music Lyceum for gifted children (affiliated with the St. Petersburg Conservatory). She quickly gained stage experience performing duets with her mother on major stages both at home and abroad. In 1993, the family moved to the Netherlands, where her father became principal double bassist with the Radio Symphony Orchestra. Anastasia took lessons from Ms. Koosje Wijzenbeek. She began her conservatory studies in Amsterdam in 1995, first as a preparatory student with Valentin Zhuk. From 1998, she studied with Viktor Libermann and Keiko Wataya, and from 1999 with Boris Belkin (a student of Isaac Stern) at the Maastricht Conservatory. In 2003, at the age of 23, she earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Performance, and in 2006, her Master of Music degree.

She plays a 1739 Andrea Castagneri violin and an Eugene Sartory bow on loan from the Musical Instrument Fund.
