Thomas Bertrand

*1963

Thomas Bertrand was born in 1963, and as the son of a sculptor, he was exposed to the arts from an early age. After spending a short time in college, he decided to study violin making at the International School of Violin Making in Cremona. After graduating in 1986, he went to Germany to gain experience, where he learned about the restoration of old masterpieces. In 1991, he opened his workshop in Brussels, where he continues to this day to specialize in instrument making and sound optimization.

Thomas Bertrand draws his inspiration from the masterpieces of the Cremonese and Venetian builders of the classical period. An analysis of the principles underlying their work, combined with a renewed mastery of the design methods and drawing processes common at that time, has enabled him to explore new possibilities for the evolution and adaptation of instruments to meet the demands of contemporary musical life. Bertrand is a member of various violin-maker associations, such as “The Violin Society of America” and the Association of French Violin Makers (ALADFI).
