Saskia Schouten

*1961

After high school, Saskia Schouten spent a year as an apprentice with violin maker Paul de Froe in Amstelveen. She then left for Cremona, Italy, to train at the International Violin Making School (IPIALL). In 1982, she worked for a year with four colleagues in Tuscany. She then traveled with her colleague Peter Pots to Palermo to restore the instruments at the conservatory there. Following these experiences, she earned her Maestra diploma from IPIALL in Cremona in 1986 and returned to the Netherlands, where she established herself as a violin maker in Heusden.

In 2009, she moved her workshop to ’s-Hertogenbosch, where she also performs repairs and restorations. Since 1986, she has specialized primarily in building new cellos and violas. Schouten sees the fact that she plays an instrument herself as a key reason why she has developed a keen ear for adjusting the bridge and the soundpost.
