Roger Hargrave

*1948 , Leeds

Roger Hargrave (Leeds, 1948) initially studied art and taught painting at English public schools for some time. In the 1970s, he built a number of harpsichords and spinets before enrolling in the violin-making school in Newark. After completing his training, he worked for some time in the workshop of Hill & Sons in London, where he primarily restored old Italian instruments. In 1981, he moved to Bremen, where he was appointed head of the Machold workshop. There, he led a team of restorers.

In 1986, he established his own workshop, where he continued his work as a luthier and restorer. By that time, he had specialized in building replicas of old Italian master instruments. His work has been recognized with awards on several occasions at violin-making competitions. He is also a much-sought-after jury member. In recent years, Hargrave has devoted much of his time to writing scholarly works on Cremonese violin making. His scholarly work and the building of new instruments leave him no time for restoration work.
