From 1978 to 1981, René Zaal studied violin making at the Newark School of Violinmaking (England), graduating with honors. He then worked for two years with the violin maker Loerakker in Haarlem, where he further honed his skills in the repair and restoration of stringed instruments. In 1983, he established himself as an independent violin maker in Arnhem. He later moved to Doesburg and, in 1997, to Bemmel. René Zaal focuses entirely on the construction, repair, and sale of double basses.
