Michael Rosenberger was born on April 13, 1766, in Bavaria and died on November 12, 1832, in Vienna. He was a student of Anton Walter, who is considered the most important piano builder of that era. In 1796, he received his “Burgerschaft” and was registered as a piano maker. Not much is known about his life. However, it is known that he divorced his wife in 1824, which was, of course, quite unusual at the time. It is also known that he invented several other types of instruments, such as a Polyharmonikon. A number of his instruments are found in major collections, such as the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Finchcocks Collection in England, the Neumeyer Collection in Bad Krozingen (Germany), the collection of Edwin Beunk in the Netherlands, and Rice University in Houston (U.S.).
