Harry Jansen

*1959

After completing a four-year violin-making program at West Dean College in Sussex, England, Harry Jansen settled in Amsterdam in 1989. Even while still a student, he specialized in double basses. In the early years of his career as an independent luthier, he focused primarily on building new instruments, but over time, repair and restoration work also became an important part of his practice. Jansen considers it a privilege to be at the center of the rapid evolution of the double bass as an instrument, as well as of its players and everything that revolves around it.

He himself says, “I’ve seen a lot change over the past 25 years, and it seems as though the level is rising faster and faster.” This development only makes it more interesting for Jansen. He notes that the double bass is at home in every musical style and, above all, is increasingly establishing itself as a solo instrument. Jansen sees this as a challenge for himself, but also for the players.
