Gerard Tuinman

No matter how comprehensive and representative publications of instrument drawings may be, they often still lack highly relevant details, such as the thickness of the soundboard. For this reason, Gerard Tuinman has spent the past few decades studying, measuring, and playing many original fortepianos himself. Tuinman places great importance on being able to see the original instrument with his own eyes and play it with his own hands. By doing so, he has been able to experience the unique qualities of instruments such as an 1805 Nannette Streicher, an 1828 Graf housed in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, and three 5-octave Walters.

Utrecht, 1992-

The luthier creates his own construction drawings, often based on collected measurement data, sometimes using X-rays, but also—whenever possible—by directly comparing them with original parts when he has a historical instrument under restoration.

Even though Tuinman strives to create a replica of the original in every detail, he leaves room for adjustments to certain elements so that players from a modern background can also play comfortably.

Gerard Tuinman works in Utrecht.
