Daniël Royé

*1957 , Amsterdam

Daniël Royé was born in Amsterdam in 1957, the son of sculptor Ab Royé, and grew up surrounded by music, craftsmanship, and art. He began making his first musical instruments while still in high school at the Montessori Lyceum in Amsterdam. Beginning in 1978, he gained recognition as a maker of classical guitars, lutes, and baroque guitars. His key mentors included the violin makers Paul Gerhard Schmidt and Bram But, as well as the guitar and lute maker Nico van der Waals. In 1981, Royé established himself as an independent violin maker at Oude Looiersstraat 16 in Amsterdam. He focused on crafting new stringed instruments: violins, violas, cellos, double basses, and bows.

He has been a member of the Dutch Association of Violin and Bow Makers since 1992. Studying antique string instruments with exceptional tonal qualities is a major interest of his and inspires him in the crafting of his own instruments. Thanks to his versatility and years of experience, he is able to focus continuously on his primary goal: crafting stringed instruments with optimal playability and tonal possibilities.
