violin

Anonymous

built in Füssen (surrounding area) in ± 1750

An anonymous violin, made in Germany, Füssen school, mid-18th century. Labeled (and for decades also attributed to) David Tecchler, Rome, 1706 (based on an appraisal by Hieronymus Köstler in Stuttgart, 2024).

History of this instrument

The Musical Instrument Fund was able to purchase this violin from a Dutch dealer in 1999 thanks to the generous support of the Van den Berch van Heemstede Foundation. The violin is therefore known as the “Jhr. I.L. van den Berch van Heemstede violin.” In 2000, Rémy Baudet (concertmaster of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century) became its first player, followed by Sjaan Oomen, Josine Jansen, Florin Negreanu, Igor Ruhadze, and, since late 2014, Daria Gorban. The violin was once sold at auction as an authentic David Tecchler and was regarded as such for decades. Further expert analysis by Hieronymus Köstler in 2024 revealed that the violin was not built by David Tecchler. However, it is still unclear who actually built the instrument.
