built in Mittenwald

An anonymous violin, built in Mittenwald in the 18th century, from the “Kloz school.” Dark varnish, light fingerboard and tailpiece.

History of this instrument

The Musical Instrument Fund received this violin on loan from Cornélie Möller - Nijenbandring de Boer when she decided in 2006 to permanently close the doors of the world-famous firm Max Möller & Sons on Willemsparkweg in Amsterdam. Three generations of violin makers had built, restored, and sold stringed instruments there. When it became clear that there would be no fourth generation to take over the business, Cornélie Möller felt she had to close it; “I cannot guarantee the craftsmanship and ethics of the Möllers if I sell the business.” Throughout the entire history of the Musical Instrument Fund, Cornélie Möller has been of great significance to the foundation; she continues to maintain and demonstrate that deep commitment, among other things by lending a few very beautiful Baroque violins, one of which is this Kloz.
Cecilia Bernardini was the first to play the violin. Ryuko Elizabeth Reid and John Ma followed her. Since 2021, Zohra Jongerius has been the lucky one to hold the instrument in her hands.
